The Google Brain team has been working on computing systems called ―neural networks‖—systems that were designed based on how neurons work in the human brain.

This time, they gave a mission to three of the neural networks, which they named Alice, Bob and Eve. Each of the networks had its own job—Alice sent messages to Bob, Eve tried to ―eavesdrop‖(偷听) and find out the messages, and Alice and Bob had to figure out a way to hide the messages from Eve. All the help that Alice and Bob got from the researchers before the mission began was made up of a set of numbers, which Eve didn‘t have access

 to.

At first, Alice was not very good at sending secret messages. But slowly it worked on a way to encrypt(加密) them—putting information into a special code so that others could not understand it if they got the information—using he numbers given by researchers. And after practice, Bob also came to be able to decrypt(解密) Alice‘s messages. Without the numbers or keys, Eve failed to understand Alice‘s ―speech‖ most of the time.

This test is considered a big step in the development of computers‘ learning skills. ―Computing with neural networks on this scale has only become possible in the last few years, so we truly are at the beginning of what‘s possible, ‖ Joe Sturonas of US encryption company PKWARE told New Scientist magazine.

Unfortunately, the test happened only one week after UK physicist Stephen Hawking, While speaking at Cambridge University, warned how AI(artificial intelligence)could develop a will of its own. This could be ―either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to human being‖, he said.

But just as Sturonas pointed out, no matter what the possibilities of computers are in the future, they are just starting out. We still have plenty of time to work out a solution before they get anywhere near becoming a threat to humanity. 1.For what purpose was the test conducted? A.To study how neurons work in the human brain. B.To study how computing systems work and learn. C.To find out a more effective way to keep secrets. D.To find out a more powerful way to break the codes. 2.How does the computing system work in the test? A.encrypting—messages—code—messages—decrypting B.messages—encrypting—code—decrypting—messages C.code—messages—encrypt—decrypting—messages D.messages—code—decrypting—encrypting—messages 3.What can we learn from Hawking‘s warning? A.AI must be a blessing. B.AI should be forbidden. C.AI is sure to be a failure. D.AI is a double-edged sword. 4.What‘s Sturonas attitude towards the development of AI? A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Puzzled. D.Panicked.

A study of more than five million books, both fiction and non-fiction, has found a marked decline in the use of emotional words over time. The researchers form the University of Bristol used Google Ngram Viewer, an online database for finding the frequency of terms in scanned books, to look for more than 600 particular words identified as representing anger, dislike, fear, joy, sadness and surprise. They found that almost all of the categories showed a drop in these ―mood words‖ over time. Only in the category of fear was there an increase in usage. ―It is a steady and continuous decline,‖ said Dr Alberto Acerbi. He assumed that the result might be explained by a change in the position occupied by literature, in a crowded media landscape. ―One thing could be that in parallel to books the 20th century saw the start of other media. Maybe these media—movies, radio, drama—had more emotional content than books.‖ Although both joy and sadness followed the general downwards trend, the research, published in the journal PLOS One, found that they also exhibited another interesting behavior: the ratio (比率) between the two varied greatly, apparently mirroring historical events. During the Roaring Twenties the joy-to-sadness ratio reached its highest point that would not occur again until before the recent financial crash. Then, in 1941, the ratio plunged at the height of World War II. Nevertheless, the researchers held a reserved opinion about their claim that their result reflected wider social trends. In the paper, they even argue that the opposite could be true. ―It has been suggested, for example, that it was the suppression (压抑) of desire in ordinary Elizabethan English life that increased demand for writing ‗filled with romance‘… perhaps,‖ they conclude, ―songs and books may not reflect the real population any more than catwalk models reflect the average body.‖ 5.The study was carried out by way of_________. A.scanning the books with an online scanner B.counting the number of words in the books C.searching digitized texts for emotional words D.analyzing different topics of the books

6.Which of the following is one of the research findings? A.Usage decreased in all the categories of mood words. B.Usage of most mood words kept falling over time. C.The decline was caused by the rise of other media. D.The unfavorable position of literature led to the decline. 7.What does the underlined word ―plunged‖ probably mean? A.increased B.changed C.dropped D.twisted 8.The researchers suspect that _______________. A.their research result reflected wider social trends. B.their research result was the contrary of social trends. C.there was a suppression of desire in Elizabethan English life. D.catwalk models reflect the population better than songs and books.

Microaggressions are minor racial attacks. Gabrielle, a 15-year-old teenager, knows the pain of microaggressions all too well, ―When I was in the seventh grade, this guy told me that my hair looked like a rat"s nest and I needed to comb it. It makes you feel awful and makes you feel like you are dismissed and it makes you feel unheard,‖ she said. Microaggressions are being spoken about now by young black teenagers like Gabrielle in light of the racial unrest across the country and amid the new school year. ―We"re pretty for black girls,‖ said other black teenagers, describing microaggressions they have faced. ―We"re outspoken to be black.‖ According to a study, black teenagers experience an average of over five incidents of discrimination a day, specifically teenage girls. ―I do believe that microaggressions and racism are part of a series of continuous events,‖

Dr. Walker said. "Experiencing acts of microaggression can have an effect on self-respect," she said. ―It starts to affect anxiety and depression and worry." Black children who are exposed to racism face health risks too, with higher rates of obesity, as well as depression, data shows. The rate of suicide attempts among black teens also continues to rise, while rates among other racial groups have fallen. Microaggressions can also be complicated, especially if the person who is offending has no intention of being hurtful. Walker"s advice for young black girls is to both take a deep breath and also try to educate other people, when possible. ―Take a deep breath and centering yourself," she said. ―They could say, you may not have realized it, but what you said is hurtful.‖ Walker says his may take some practice, but it is skill that can be developed. ―I think a lot of times in our society we want to be perfect and things just right for us, but a lot of times, it does take practice, and that"s okay. Just keep at it and lead with sympathy.‖ 9.Which of the following best describe Gabrielle? A.She thinks microaggressions are not serious. B.She becomes concerned about her hairstyle. C.She feels uncomfortable about microaggression. D.She distinguishes herself among black teen girls. 10.How does Gabrielle sound when talking of her racial identity? A.Bitter. B.Sympathetic. C.Angry. D.Proud 11.What does Dr. Walker recommend doing? A.The offended black girls should voice their feelings frankly. B.She advises handling microaggressions and discrimination equally. There"s a Crocodile in Our Pickle Jar(咸菜缸) ―Alex, your brother ate everything on his plate. Why don"t you be a good boy too and eat your dinner?‖ said Alex"s Mom, ―I guess you won"t be hungry for sweets then‖. "But I"m not hungry," said Alex. Alex"s Mom walked over to the countertop and brought over the most mouth-watering, tasty looking dessert you ever did see. "Okay, who wants a piece of chocolate cake?‖ Before anyone else at the table could speak a single word, Alex called out, ―Me, me, me, me, me!‖ ―Alex, you just said you‘re not hungry,― said Alex"s Mom. "How could you possibly want a piece of cake?‖ ―I just got hungry all of a sudden,― said Alex. ―Good, I bet you"re ready to eat your peas and carrots then.‖

"I"m not hungry for them. I"ll just have a piece of cake please,― said Alex. ―Alex, it doesn"t work that way. To get a piece of cake you"ll have to eat your dinner first. ‖ "But I don"t want too!‖ ―Well, I guess you"ll just have to call it a night,‖ said Alex"s Dad. "You"re excused from the table Alex. Brush your teeth and get to bed, young man.‖ ―Yes, sir," replied Alex. As Alex stood up from the table, his brother pretended to be flying an airplane. After a bite of chocolate cake made a safe landing in his brother"s mouth, Alex ran out of the room as fast as he could. Being sent to bed without having dessert was tough enough, but being teased by his brother is what really took the cake. After he brushed his teeth and climbed into bed, Alex found it hard to fall asleep that night. His stomach sounded like an angry lion and he felt dizzy. Alex was so hungry that he felt weak and the room was spinning! As he made his way to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door, Alex could hardly wait to sneak a nice big piece of chocolate cake.
