Hemudu Relics

Hemudu Relics, located at Liangshuqiao Village of Hemudu Town, Yuyao City, is a site of cultural relics of the Neolithic Age (BC 7000). Found in 1973 and excavated in 1973 and 1977, the relics at present consist of four ancient cultural layers whose accumulation is as thick as four meters. Hemudu (whose translation is “the Ferry Place on the Yaojiang River”) was in the past called “Huangmudu” or “the Ferry-place near the Tomb of the revered Mr. Huang” for it is the place where Huangong—one of the four venerable elders in the Western Han Dynasty (206

B.C.-A.D. 24) lived and died. In February 1982, Hemudu entered in the list of the National Key Cultural Preservation Units and later it was listed as one of the National Education Base of in patriotism. Hemudu Museum of Relics was opened in May 1993 and its name is the inscription by Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the CPC and President of China.

Hemudu Relics Museum comprises two parts: the Exhibition Area and the Excavation Site. The Exhibition Area is a complex of six buildings which are connected to one another by covered corridors. Each building is patterned after the Hemudu “raised house” of 7,000 years ago, typical of “long ridge, short eaves, and elevated foundation.” Built on 456 stilts, the buildings take the shape of a rafter roof construction and on the sloping exposed walls stand seven sets of structural components, imitating the mortise and tenon components of houses 7,000 years ago. The buildings, with brown walls and red tile, are in great harmony with the environment. The front building is in shape of a flying roc—an enormous legendary bird transformed from a gigantic fish—totem of our Hemudu ancestors.

Hemudu Relics is a relics of a typical village of matriarchal society in its heyday. In 1973 archaeologists discovered that the relics cover an area of 40,000 square meters, consisting of four cultural layers and the fourth layer was formed 7,000 years ago. After two large-scale excavations,in an area of 2,800 meters excavated, some 6,700 archaeological findings were unearthed which include sets of farming tools and living utensils made of different material of animal bones, jade, stone, wood and pottery. Together with the findings are large numbers of remains of cultivated rice seeds, raised-style houses, tombs and plants and animals. These findings, named “Hemudu Culture”, show that 7,000 years ago at Hemudu there was a highly advanced primitive culture marked by its highly-advanced architecture, pottery making, textile technology and excellent primitive art. This culture indicates that the Changjiang River Valley, like the Yellow River Valley, is the cradle of the Chinese civilization. This conclusion has been included in Chinese history textbooks.

去发掘现场会使你大开眼界,河姆渡古文化遗址是当地村民在1973年夏天兴修水利时发现的,先后两期共发掘2800平方米,经专家们的分析研究和放射性碳14的科学测定,确认河姆渡早期文化遗存,距今已有六千九百多年的历史,总面积达4万平方米,是属于我国早期新石器时代的遗址之一。经两次考古发掘,发现它由四个互相叠压,又有内在联系的文化层组成。第一、第二层距今5000至5500年,属母系氏族公社末期;
