The Afghan government has reacted angrily to a US deal in which five senior Taliban militants from Guantanamo Bay were handed over to Qatar in exchange for the release of an American soldier held captive by the Taliban. Sergeant Bergdahl is now recovering in a hospital in Germany. At a news conference in the United States, his parents said they had not spoken to their son yet and that his recovery would be a long process. His mother Jani Bergdahl said she looked forward to seeing his son soon.

Police in northeast Nigeria say a bomb attack has killed at least 14 people and injured several more. Reports say the target of the explosion in the town of Mubi was a bar where people were watching football on TV. The town close to the border with Cameroon is in Adamawa state, one of three where a state of emergency has been declared due to ongoing attacks by the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.

A video tape of a speech by the senior commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards appears to back claims that the presidential elections five years ago were rigged to prevent the return to power of reformists. On the tape, the commander Mohammad Ali Jafari is seen telling a gathering of Iranian officials that the return of the reformers was a red line for the Guards. The tape was posted on the Internet by a well-known dissident in Tehran Mohammed Nourizad who says it's evidence of the rigging of the elections in favor of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry has denied that a woman sentenced to death for

renouncing Islam is about to be released. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said comments attributed to a senior Sudanese official Abdullahi al-Azureg implying that the release was imminent were taken out of context, and the case was a matter of the courts. Meriam Ibrahim's lawyer Mohaned Mustafa said they had heard nothing from the courts.

The government of incumbent leader of Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo, says it will cut diplomatic ties with any countries recognizing ambassadors named by his rival Alassane Ouattara. The statement came as a delegation from the West African regional group in ECOWAS which recognizes Mr. Ouattara as the winner of recent presidential elections held a separate talk in Abidjan with the two men. ECOWAS is demanding that Mr. Gbagbo step down office or the possibility are removal by force.

So far, there's been no indications that the mediation efforts have met with any more success than those led by the former South African President Thabo Mbeki and the chairman of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping. Meanwhile, a U.N peacekeeping patrol came under attack by a crowd in a pro-Gbagbo area of Abidjan. One vehicle was burned and a peacekeeper was injured by a machete.

Christian and Muslim leaders in the Nigeria have accused the country's politicians of stoking religious violence. They were meeting following a series of clashes in the central city of Jos.

Speaking in Lagos, the president of a Christian association of Nigeria accuses some politicians of attempting to make the country ungovernable. This joint statement came after a weekend of violence in Jos in central Nigeria. At least 80 people have been reported killed and 190 injured in attacks which began on Christmas Eve. The atmosphere in Jos remains tense and armed security forces are patrolling the streets.

The Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has said he will be the first to recognize Southern Sudan if it votes for independence in the referendum due on 9th, January. Mr. Bashir told thousands of supporters at a rally that a new Southern Sudan will be welcomed as a brotherly state.

Thousands of homes and businesses in North Ireland are without running water after a fall in the recent cold weather led to burst water mains. The local water company has described the situation as unprecedented and is handing out bottle of supply from its depots. But many people have been without water since last Friday and they are complaining that they cannot get hold of a bottle of water or reach emergency information lines.

"I'm begging for a bottle of water from the supermarket where chairman using the bottle to flush the toilets and filling the can with a lot of water. So it's gonna be an interesting targo."

"The awful thing is that there's nobody answering phones and it was only that my daughter that stands with this firm for a couple of days, put on the computer and then finds there's no water to be given right here."

President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered Russian prosecutors to investigate the management of Moscow's two main airports after fights broke out involving frustrated passengers. They were stranded when bad weather forced the cancellations of hundreds of flights. Travelers were seen trying to beat up staffs at Sheremetyevo Airport and passengers at Domodedovo Airport stormed the passport control.

Russia has strongly condemned the western criticism of the trial of Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The former oil tycoon was convicted on Monday of financial crimes for a second time. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow said attempts to put pressure on the court were unacceptable and outsiders should mind their own business. It describes as groundless of comments by the American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the verdict raised questions about selected

prosecutions.

Police in Italy say an anarchist group which sent parcel bombs to foreign embassies in Rome was responding to an appeal by a group that carried out a similar attack in Greece. Bombs exploded at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome last week injuring two people and another was defused at the Greek embassy on Monday.

The American economic professor, who paved the way for low-cost air travel, Alfred E Kahn has died at age 83. M.G looks back his legacy.

Alfred E Kahn was instrumental in garnering the support needed to push through the U.S airline deregulation act of 1978. The acts striped away elaborate 40-year-old system of controls. That meant all decisions for airlines on ticket prices and roots were subject to an approval by government agency. Deregulation rapidly led to massive cuts in air fares. Some famous names in American aviation like P disappeared entirely as they failed to adapt to a new era.

A Poll conducted by the governor of the American state of New Mexico, Bill Richardson is reported to show a majority in favor of pardoning the iconic 19th century Wild West outlaw Billy the Kid. Mr. Richardson has until Friday when he leaves office whether to act. Billy the Kid who was reputed of kill of more than 20 people while still at his teen was shot dead in 1881 after escaping from jail but he faced execution.
